Description
Platypterygius sp.
Ichthyosaur
Lower Cretaceous
Stary Oskol, Belogrod Oblast, Russia
Gorgeous 63mm fully rooted ichthyosaur tooth.
Platypterygius is one of the genera of ichthyosaurs that lived during the Cretaceous after an extinction event at the end of the Jurassic nearly wiped out the group.
Shark and ichthyosaur teeth were coming from Russia in the 90’s but the supply was largely exhausted by the 2000’s. Today, we see only a few specimens being traded or resold from old collections.
