Here is a fossil cone from a time when the once-tropical forests that covered large parts of North America during the Early Eocene were well on their way to being replaced by temperate, more open woodlands. The trees of this time and area were essentially modern. You would have seen alders, redwoods, oak, spruce, and willow trees among others.
This cone is very well-preserved, exhibiting some great detail.
