Description
Gyroptychius agassizi
Fish
Devonian
Old Red Sandstone
Orkney, Scotland
Very large 330mm fish on 280mm x 400mm slab
Gyroptychius is sometimes described as a “lungfish” but it is actually a genus in the extinct Family Osteolepididae, which is closer to the ancestry of amphibians than lungfishes. It is a lesser-known relative of Osteolepis which is also known from the Orkney site.
A great piece for the person looking to add something unusual from the Paleozoic to a fish collection.
