Description
Camptostroma roddyi
Echinoderm
Early Cambrian
Kinzers Formation
York, Pennsylvania, USA
53mm excellent, extremely rare echinoderm on 130mm slab.
Camptostroma is a genus was once considered an early jellyfish or jellyfish-like and then perhaps an edrioasteroid but now it is classified as an early echinoderm and one of the first to show the pentameral (five-sided) symmetry typical of modern adult forms. So far, it seems it’s known only from this deposit.
You don’t see much from the Kinzers Formation these days and this creature is as rare as it is unusual.
