Description

Leptotheuthis gigas Meyer, 1834
Late Jurassic
Solnhofen Limestone
Eichstadt Germany

Enormous squid nearly 3 feet long on 41 inch long plate with soft parts such as tentacles preserved. Even the grasping hooks on the tentacles are preserved.

The super fine-grained limestones in the area of Solnhofen, Germany allowed for the preservation of the feather imprints of what was considered the earliest-known bird. It turns out the rock preserves even more delicate organic structures such as the muscles of a horseshoe crab and the body of a jellyfish.

Leptotheuthis is one of the largest fossil squid ever found. It is related to modern cuttlefish, technically it is a vampyromorph coleoid.
