Description
Cocytinus gyrinoides
Middle Pennsylvanian
Cannel below the Upper Freeport #7 Coal
Ohio Diamond Coal Mine, Linton, Ohio, USA
Complete 90mm lysorophian amphibian on 155mm x 170mm slab. Extremely rare.
Carboniferous. Lysorophidae.
Cocytinus is a genus of extinct, limbless amphibian known from the Late Carboniferous of Ohio (possibly Europe as well) and the Early Permian of Texas.
The Linton site is long gone now. A nice fish from there is rare enough but an amphibian is rarer still. On top of all that, Cocytinus is perhaps the rarest amphibian from the locality.
