Description
Theropod Tooth
Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian)
Deckar 2,3 Formation
Talsint, Anoual, Morocco
27mm black theropod tooth on 77mm matrix
This beautiful black tooth is from a fairly new discovery in Morocco. There has been intense debate as to exactly what species these teeth represent and even what age they are. The geology around Anoual is complex with both Jurassic and Cretaceous terrestrial deposits present. The tooth morphology suggests these teeth are not Jurassic, but more likely contemporaneous with the well known Kem Kem fauna and thus similar species. The black color is striking and the matrix is more consolidated so in-situ specimens are apparently easier to collect.
