Dendraster is a genus of sand dollar (an echinoderm group) that appeared late in the Miocene and still lives today. The species, D. gibbsi, is common at some localities in California. The species, D. gibbsi is common at some localities in California. Among the hundreds that can be collected in a single day, rare examples of unusually large or pathologic/healed specimens can be found in that same day.
