Dunkleosteus was the largest animal of its time, reaching a length of perhaps 30 feet and belonged to the Class Placodermi, the placoderms, aka the jawed armored fishes. It was in every kid’s paleontology book often seen chasing sharks.
Dunkleosteus is known only from fossilized head and body armor bones and tooth plates. The tooth plates worked together more like a self-sharpening guillotine chopping even large prey into bite-size pieces. Fifty percent larger than the great white sharks of our day, it was one of the nightmare predators of all time.
