Description

Eophycis jamnensis
Upper Oligocene
Menilite Formation
Outer Carpathians, Krepac, Poland

67mm fish on 87mm shale slab.

Eophycis is an extinct genus within the Family Moridae which includes lesser-known cod-like fishes such as codlings, hakelings, and moras. Codlings are known off the California coast today.

An obscure genus for the fossil fish collector. We can’t think of another occurrence of it.

Fish fossils can be a challenge to identify when they come from a lesser-known site and they don’t compare that well with anything that has been on the market previously.  This specimen comes from a site known for deepwater fish. Here’s an article about that site:

Jerzmanska, A. (1968),  Ichthyofaune des couches à ménilite (Flysch des Karpathes). Acta Palaeontologica Polonica, 13, 379-481.
