Xiphactinus is an extinct genus of large predatory fish that lived during the Late Cretaceous period in the continent-spanning inland sea over what is now the US Midwest, approximately 112 to 66 million years ago. It belonged to the family Ichthyodectidae and is known for its massive size and fearsome appearance.
