Description
Dentalium sp.
Miocene
Lincoln Creek Formation
Grays Harbor County, Washington, USA
Extremely rare, 48mm tusk shell preserved in translucent chalcedony.
Other Mollusc.
Dentalium is a scaphopod mollusk commonly called a “tusk shell.” It dates back to the Miocene and still lives today.
A small variety of fossils (nautiloids, clam internal molds) can be found replaced by chalcedony (agate) at this locality with some having degrees of that incredibly rare quality of translucence (not quite transparent but light passes through).
