Description
Coelopleurus coronalis
Echinoid
Middle Eocene (Biarritzian)
Temblor Formation
Vich – Barcelona, Spain
24mm echinoid on 38mm matrix.
Coelopleurus is a genus of regular sea urchin (echinoderm) that appeared during the Cretaceous, survived the mass extinction event at the end of the period, and survived to the present day. It’s known as a fossil from Europe and North America and is still found today across the world where warm water flows at depths of 75 to 500 meters.
A nice example of an uncommon echinoid from an oddball locality. You used to see more fossils from Spain in the old days.
