Nyssa is the genus for tupelo trees which includes trees locally known as sourgum or pepperidge trees.  It dates back to the Late Cretaceous in North America.  Nyssa spread into Europe and Asia across the Eocene and Oligocene but died out across much of its range by the Pleistocene.  Today, it survives in North America, Central America and eastern Asia.
