Description
Late Jurassic
Solnhofen Limestone
Eichstadt, Germany
Pterosaur wing with impressions of the wing membrane itself. Extremely rare.
Pterosaur, Solnhofen
Rhamphorhynchus is one of the widely-recognized pterosaurs though it is actually a rare find where it is known. Its lightly-built skeleton makes it a poor candidate for fossilization so any identifiable remains are highly-prized among collectors.
Rhamphorhynchus was one of the long-tailed pterosaurs of the Jurassic. For some reason all the long-tailed forms died out at the end of the period while short-tailed forms survived.
Here the lovely Clarice presents the specimen in its custom frame.
