Description
Zarafasaura oceanis
Plesiosaur
Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian)
Upper CIII Phosphates
Sidi Daoui, Morocco
65mm rooted elasmosaur tooth on matrix. Even has the groove in the enamel from the adjacent tooth.
Zarafasaura is a genus of plesiosaur that lived during the last few million years of the Cretaceous. So far, it is known only from this area of Morocco.
Plesiosaurs appeared late in the Triassic Period and were a very successful group of marine reptiles during the Jurassic and Cretaceous. They died out during the K/T mass extinction event.
Here’s a rooted plesiosaur tooth in matrix for the collector looking for a reptilian display piece. As a bonus, it comes with better locality information than most Moroccan phosphate fossils.
