Description
Amphibian Egg String
Pliocene
Rita Blanca Formation
Oldham County, TX USA.
Extremely rare Pliocene egg string. 22mm x 10mm on 59mm slab.
Amphibian.
Amphibian eggs are extremely rare in the fossil record. Their eggs are soft-bodied and typically laid in water connected together in strings or as a mass. Such a delicate natural product would seem an unlikely candidate for fossilization, but in the right environment and under the right circumstances, it has happened for other animals just as fragile.
