Description
Jellyfish
Late Jurassic
Solnhofen Limestone
Eichstadt Germany
Rare, huge 200mm jellyfish on big 300mm plate.
Jellyfish, Soft-bodied. Cnidarian. Cnidaria.
The super fine-grained limestones in the area of Solnhofen, Germany allowed for the preservation of the feather imprints of what was considered the earliest-known bird. It turns out the rock preserves even more delicate organic structures such as the muscles of a horseshoe crab and the body of a jellyfish.
Jellyfish are quite uncommon even at Solnhofen and this one is unusually large for the locality. It would be a great specimen for those who try to find jellyfish from as many localities as possible or those looking for interesting soft-bodied animal fossils.
